Supporting residents to find homes better suited to their needs

The staff at Cornwall Housing have been working together to find the right homes for two residents at Crow’s Nest View in Penzance.

One of the residents had been struggling, which was causing disagreements with his neighbours. So, Pam from Cornwall Housing’s Specialist Services team, together with the tenant’s Neighbourhood Enforcement Officer and other support agencies, worked together to discuss how they could assist the resident.

In consultation with the resident, it was agreed that Crow’s Nest View was not the right place for him. So, the team completed a HomeChoice application and agreed a care package with the resident. With these plans in place, the resident was supported whilst he awaited a new home.

Then, the perfect home came up. It was a two-bedroom bungalow within just 5 minutes of Crow’s Nest View. The resident applied for the home and was accepted through LiveWest, who had discussed the support he needed with Cornwall Housing.

Pam Parr, Specialist Services Scheme Manager at Cornwall Housing, said: “At his request, I visited the resident last week, and he was delighted with his new home. He is able to continue the voluntary and social events that are important to him and still has support from Cornwall Housing. He even gave me a thank you card.”

The resident’s mum said: “He rang me last night for an hour and 10 minutes. He rang this morning for 18 and a half minutes. What a difference! He was cheerful, chatty and positive and told me that Pam had called in to see how he was getting on. He showed her what he’d been doing in the garden, and I think he was pleased that she had taken an interest. It was actually a pleasure to talk to him. Long may it continue.”

As the resident’s previous home at Crow’s Nest View was now vacant, Cornwall Housing was able to offer the home to another resident in need. She had mobility issues and was struggling with the stairs and bath in her current flat.

Pam said: “The now empty flat is on the ground floor and has a walk-in shower. It’s much better suited to her. Now she doesn’t have to leave Crow’s Nest and can continue to live independently.

“She was delighted. We signed the paperwork this week and she started painting her new flat before I had even left the building, using her decorating voucher.”

These are two great examples of Cornwall Housing teams working together to get the best outcome for residents. The two residents and their neighbours at Crow’s Nest View are now much happier.
