We have been working closely with local authorities and the community to transform Tregear Gardens in Truro. Once an area troubled by anti-social behaviour, overgrown gardens and neglected buildings, Tregear is now a safe and nicer place to live.
Recognising the issues that Tregear Gardens was facing, in October 2023 our Area Housing Officers brought agencies together to create a “Neighbourhood Action Plan, outlining the necessary improvements for the area.
How did we create the action plan?
Tackling anti-social behaviour was key to improving Tregear. Working with Devon & Cornwall Police, we gathered evidence using a noise app, diary entries, and photo and video recordings. Residents were also encouraged to report any issues of anti-social behaviour to us confidentially.
By August 2024, this proactive and collaborative approach has already led to:
Neighbourhood improvements: We addressed the external issues outlined in the action plan, like filling potholes, replacing damaged signs, and repairing garden walls. We fixed cracks in buildings, installed new washing lines, unblocked drains, and repaired letterboxes and broken steps. Additionally, we replaced old guttering and refreshed stairwells by cleaning, painting, and adding new handrails.
Regular grounds maintenance: We’ve improved the green spaces at Tregear, with regular grass cutting, cleaning of paths and steps, and thorough weeding and pruning of footpaths.
A reduction in anti-social behaviour: We issued warnings and put support systems in place for those who needed it. The action plan also now prevents people with drug problems or criminal records from moving into the area.
Residents have noticed the changes. One resident said: "I would like to express my thanks for turning Tregear Gardens around. It is now back to how it was, a pleasant place to live. The grounds are being tended on a regular basis and look good. I look forward to you keeping it this way, and I am glad you regard us as worthy tenants.”
