Here are some easy things you can do to prepare for the winter months.
Check your heating early
Before the weather gets too cold, switch on your heating to make sure everything is working properly. Sometimes systems that have been off for a while can stop working over summer. Testing it now gives you time to fix any problems before plumbers and gas engineers get busy.
Know where your stopcock is
It’s important to know how to turn off your water supply in case of an emergency, such as a burst pipe. Take a moment to find your stopcock now, so you’re ready if you ever need it.
Be ready for power cuts
Power cuts can happen more often in winter. Keep a few torches, candles, batteries and blankets in an easy-to-reach place just in case.
Let fresh air in
Even when it’s chilly, try to open your windows for about 20 minutes each day. This helps fresh air move through your home and prevents damp, condensation and mould from building up.
Check for drafts
To keep your home warm and cosy, look for gaps around doors and windows where cold air might sneak in. Sealing drafts can make a big difference - both for comfort and in helping to lower your heating bills.
Tidy up the garden
Winter often brings strong winds and storms. Make sure anything that could blow away - like garden furniture, bins or pots - is stored safely or tied down. Sweep up fallen leaves and keep paths clear to prevent slips.
Look after yourself and others
Remember to keep warm, eat well and check in on neighbours who might need a little extra help this winter.
