Pensioners are being warned to watch out for fake text messages about the Winter Fuel Payment, after reports of scams increased across the UK.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) says some criminals are pretending to be government staff and sending texts that ask people to “apply” for the Winter Fuel Payment or give their bank details. These messages are fake.

You do not need to apply

For most people who are eligible, the Winter Fuel Payment is paid automatically, just like in previous years.

The government will never ask for your bank details by text message or email.

You can check official information here on the government website:

How the scam works

Residents say they have received texts such as:

“Apply now to get your Winter Fuel Payment”

“Click this link and confirm your bank details”

The DWP says these messages are not real. They are designed to steal personal or banking information.

What to do if you receive a suspicious message

  • Do not click any links
  • Do not reply or give any bank or personal information
  • Forward the text to 7726 – this goes to your mobile phone provider to investigate

If you think you may have given details to a scammer:

  • Contact your bank immediately
  • Report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040

Worried about whether a message is real?

You can check information yourself on the official government website:

www.gov.uk/winter-fuel-payment

If a message looks strange, rushed, or asks for details - it is safer to ignore it. The DWP says it will not send texts asking you to apply.
