Easy ways to save energy at home
- Turn it off: Switch off lights and appliances when not in use, avoiding standby mode where possible.
- Use energy-efficient bulbs: Replace older bulbs, including halogen spots, with energy-saving LEDs to reduce electricity use.
- Adjust your thermostat: Lowering it by just 1°C can make a noticeable difference in costs without impacting comfort.
- Radiators: If radiators are under windows, tuck curtains behind them to trap heat, and use radiator panels to keep the heat in.
- Set a heating schedule: Use your central heating programmer to control heating times, rather than adjusting the thermostat frequently.
- Thermal curtains: Close thermal or heavy curtains at dusk in winter to help keep the heat in.
- Washing: Set washing machines to 30°C when possible, use eco-programs, and avoid drying clothes on radiators to prevent excess moisture. Dry clothes outside if possible. Clean the filters in your tumble dryer and use eco balls.
- Water: Only boil the amount of water you need in kettles, and try using the kettle to pre-boil water for cooking, as it’s more energy-efficient.
- Cooking: Use the right-sized pan for each oven ring, and keep lids on pots to conserve heat and reduce cooking time. Don’t keep the oven door open for too long as the oven will then have to work harder to get back to temperature.
- Fridges & freezers: Keep fridges and freezers full. Defrost regularly, let hot food cool before storing, and keep the temperature between 3-5°C for efficiency.
Sign up to the Priority Service Register (PSR)
If you’re vulnerable, you may qualify for the Priority Service Register (PRS), a free service provided by all energy suppliers and network companies. You may qualify if you are of pensionable age, are registered disabled, have visual or hearing impairments or suffer from long term ill health. The PRS can support you with:
- Accessible billing (Braille, large print, audio)
- Bill copies sent to a carer or family member
- Priority reconnection during power cuts
- Quarterly meter readings if you’re unable to read it yourself
- Moving your meter for easier access
- Free safety measures, such as a password scheme for security from fraudulent callers
- Temporary cooking and heating solutions in the event of disruptions
To register, contact your energy supplier(s). If you switch providers, make sure to re-register as the PRS service may not transfer automatically.
Warm Home Discount
The Warm Home Discount offers eligible households an annual £140 credit to help with energy costs in colder months. You qualify automatically if you receive Guaranteed Pension Credit, but if you don't you may still be eligible to apply. Each supplier has its own criteria, so check directly with your provider. The discount doesn’t affect Cold Weather or Winter Fuel Payments.
