As the days get colder, a few simple checks can help keep your home warm, safe and comfortable this winter.
Check your heating
Before the cold weather really arrives, it’s a good idea to switch your heating on and make sure it's working properly. Testing it now means there's plenty of time to sort out any problems before heating engineers get busier during the winter months.
Our heating contractor, CCS, has put together a guide with simple checks and advice if something doesn't seem right.

Keep the warmth in
Small changes can make a big difference. Using a draught excluder at the bottom of an outside door and closing your curtains when it gets dark can help keep the warmth in and make your home feel cosier.
But don't forget fresh air!
Even when it's cold outside, opening your windows for a short time each day can help reduce condensation and lower the risk of damp and mould.
Be ready for power cuts
Power cuts can happen more often in winter. Keep a few torches, batteries and blankets in an easy-to-reach place just in case.
Know where your stopcock is
If a pipe bursts or you have a leak, you may need to turn off your water supply quickly. Take a few minutes to find your stopcock now, so you know where it is if you ever need it.
Get ready for winter weather
Strong winds, heavy rain and storms are more common during winter. If you have a garden, make sure bins, garden furniture and other loose items are secure. Clearing away fallen leaves can also help keep paths safe and less slippery.
Look after yourself and others
Remember to keep warm, eat well and check in on neighbours, family and friends who might need a little extra help this winter.
A quick chat or offer of support can make a real difference.
