We take fire safety very seriously. 
Our flats and residential schemes have several measures to protect you and your family from harm. Some of them are our responsibility and some things are your responsibility.
Our Responsibilities
What we do to keep you safe:
- Keep fire doors and fire exits in good condition
- Provide smoke detectors
- Yearly gas safety check of appliances
- Quarterly check of communal areas
- Maintaining and testing emergency lighting and alarms
- Risk assessments and safety checks
- Take action to clear stairwells and ensure exits are clear
- Provide fire safety information
Your Responsibilities
What you must do to stay safe:
- Keep communal corridors and stairways clear
- Do not cover/disable smoke alarms
- Do not prop open or damage fire doors or exits, and never lock a designated fire exit
- Do not use gas canisters or cover heating appliances
- Give us access for your yearly gas safety check
- Do not damage or remove fire safety lighting, alarms or information
- Ensure your children and visitors are aware, and do not risk the safety of your family and neighbours

Our advice in the event of a fire
In the event of a fire that is not in your flat:
- Shut your fire door(s) and stay in your home
- Call 999
- Wait for further instructions from the Fire and Rescue Service
This ‘stay put’ (delayed evacuation) advice is based on the fire risk assessment of our buildings. This is regularly reviewed. You can request a copy of the fire risk assessment for your building by contacting firesafety@cornwallhousing.org.uk
If the fire is in your flat:
- Keep calm and get everyone out
- Make sure you close your front door and stay out
- Avoid lifts and balconies
- Call 999 immediately
- Wait for the Fire and Rescue Service in a prominent safe location near the entrance to the building
- When the Fire and Rescue Service arrive, tell them the floor and number of your flat, the location of the fire and what is on fire
- Move to a safe location away from the building and from Fire and Rescue Service operations
Be prepared by making a plan of escape:
- Plan an escape route and make sure everyone knows how to escape
- Make sure exits are kept clear
- Keep door and window keys where everyone can find them
- The best route is the normal way in and out of your home
- Think of a second route in case the first one is blocked
- Take a few minutes to practise your escape plan
- Review your plan if the layout of your home changes

- Leave the building safely using the closest exit to you
- Go to you fire assembly point
- Call 999
- Wait for further instruction from the Fire and Rescue Service

Check your Home’s Fire Safety Online
We are working with the Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service to promote an online tool that can help you identify ways to stay safe from fire in your home.
The webpage asks you a series of questions about your home to give you specific advice about fire safety.
It asks for your postcode, and if it finds that you might need specialist advice, you can request a home visit from the fire service prevention team.
