Types of Tenancies and Agreements

We offer different types of tenancies and agreements depending on the type of housing and support needed. These include:

•    Introductory Tenancies
Given to new tenants. These are usually the first step to help people settle into their home.

•    Secure Tenancies (Lifetime)
Awarded after successfully completing an introductory tenancy. These offer long-term security.

•    Assured Tenancies
Used in a small number of homes and provide similar long-term security.

•    Supported Housing Tenancies
These include extra terms to reflect the care or support provided alongside the accommodation.

•    Shared Ownership Agreements
Where you part-buy and part-rent your home.

•    Leasehold (Right to Buy)
For people who have bought their home, with service charges still applying where relevant.

•    Temporary (Non-Secure) Tenancies
Short-term housing for people who need immediate or temporary accommodation.

Examples include:
o    Short-term move-on housing
o    Government-funded housing schemes
o    Fixed-term arrangements for specific groups

•    Decant Agreements
Temporary arrangements where you move out of your home while work is carried out, with the intention of returning.

•    Licences to Occupy
Very short-term or flexible arrangements, often used in specialist accommodation or where occupation is reviewed regularly.

•    Garage Agreements
For renting a garage.

•    Pitch Agreements
For people living on residential sites such as Gypsy and Traveller sites.

Security of Tenure and Transfers

We aim to make sure tenants keep the same level of security when moving between social housing providers.

This means:
•    If you move from another social landlord, you will usually be offered a tenancy with the same level of security as your previous one.
•    We check your previous tenancy before offering a new one.
•    We aim to ensure there is no unnecessary loss of tenancy rights when you move.

What this means for you

•    Your tenancy rights are protected when you move between social housing providers.
•    You should not lose security or protections without a valid reason.
•    We make decisions fairly and consistently, following legal requirements.
