Help prevent pests around your home this autumn

As the weather gets colder, rats and mice may start looking for food and shelter closer to homes. Taking a few simple steps now can help reduce the risk of pests around your property and neighbourhood.

What you can do

Keep bins secure

Always make sure bin lids are fully closed and avoid leaving rubbish bags beside bins where possible.

Clear away food sources

Sweep up fallen fruit, clear up food waste and avoid leaving pet food outside for long periods. Bird seed and animal feed should be stored in sealed containers.

Keep gardens tidy

Overgrown shrubs and hedges, piles of leaves and cluttered storage areas can provide ideal hiding places for pests. However, rodents can also be found in well-maintained gardens and may nest under sheds and decking or in compost heaps.

Check for signs of access

Inspect your property for gaps, holes or cracks that could allow pests to enter. Check sheds, decking and outbuildings for signs of pest activity.

What if you spot rats or mice?

A single sighting does not necessarily mean there is an infestation, but it is worth staying vigilant.

Look out for signs such as:

  • Droppings
  • Burrows
  • Gnaw marks
  • Nests
  • Well-worn pathways or "rat runs"

When to contact us
