Over the past few weeks there have been several chip pan fires in tenants’ homes. CHL would like to ensure that all our residents stay safe when cooking at home.
Chip pan fires can develop rapidly and become extremely dangerous within seconds. Overheated cooking oil can ignite without warning, and attempting to extinguish the flames with water can cause an explosive fireball that spreads the fire and results in serious injuries.
To reduce the risk, never leave cooking unattended, avoid overfilling pans with oil, and never add wet or frozen food to hot oil. If possible, consider using oven chips or an air fryer instead of a traditional chip pan.
If a chip pan fire does occur, do not use water, do not move the pan, and get everyone out of the property immediately before calling 999.
