Rubbish and Recycling Fire Safety

Taking care of the planet by recycling is important to all of us, as is your safety from the effects of fire, so please follow our advice on preventing rubbish and recycling fires.

Recycling, or rubbish that has been left in an escape route will pose a serious potential risk of fire. If you are recycling, or moving rubbish from your home, please ensure that these items are not left in communal escape routes, where it can cause a serious risk to you and the other tenants in your block.

Escape routes in blocks of flats, should always be kept clear of any items that may pose a risk of fire. The evacuation procedure in your building relies on the communal area escape routes being kept clear. Keeping these communal areas clear will allow you to safely escape.

You can order a bulky waste collection from Cornwall Council via their website, or call 0300 1234 100.

Wheelie Bin Fire Safety

If you are using a wheelie bin, please follow our top 4 fire safety tips to help reduce the risk of harm being caused by a fire.

  1. Never store your wheelie bins close to your building. If the bin catches fire, it can easily spread to your home
  2. Ensure the wheelie bin is not overfilled with refuse and garbage, as any loose rubbish is inflammable and can easily catch fire and set the bin on fire, too.
  3. If your building has a bin compound, ensure that your bin is always kept within the compound.
  4. Store your wheelie bin in such a manner so that they don’t block escape routes and access.
