asbestos

What is asbestos?

Asbestos is a material that was used in building homes until it was banned in 1999. If asbestos is disturbed it can pose a health risk to individuals.

The higher risk asbestos is usually found in external building components, and the lower risk material can be found in internal décor like kitchen floor tiles and Artex ceiling paint.

How do we monitor asbestos?

  1. Cornwall Housing are currently undertaking a programme to survey all of our properties for asbestos, this is ongoing and will be fully completed by the end of 2028.
  2. We run an ‘air test’ to check those in the home have not been put at risk through exposure if there is a concern asbestos has been disturbed.
  3. Our repairs contractors have access to our asbestos survey reports which are downloaded by them to assess as a precaution prior to attending your property. An asbestos removal contractor will be instructed to attend along with the repairs contractor if there is the slightest chance asbestos could be disturbed during the repair.
  4. If you plan to undertake alterations in your home, it is really important that you contact us for permission. We will be able to advise you if there is asbestos in your home and whether it is safe to undertake the alterations.
  5. Where materials that contain asbestos are to be removed, we will inform you of the material type, location, estimated duration of the removal and the degree of control required to safely remove it. We will also consult on the actual timing of the removal, which in some cases might prohibit your access to your home for safety reasons. If this is the case our surveyor will discuss our compensation arrangements with you.
