Simple fire safety tips for Lithium-ion batteries

We are becoming reliant on phones, tablets, e-bikes and e-scooters to stay connected and get around. Many of these everyday items use lithium-ion batteries. They’re powerful and efficient - but if damaged or used incorrectly, they can cause fast-spreading fires.

Here’s how to keep yourself and neighbours safe:

Charge with care

  • Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use the correct charger.
  • Charge on a flat, solid surface - not a sofa, bed or carpet.
  • Never charge while you’re out or overnight. Unplug once the battery is full.
  • Make sure smoke alarms are working.

Store safely

  • Keep e-bikes and e-scooters inside your own flat, not in corridors, communal areas or bin stores - these are escape routes in a fire.
  • Don’t block doorways or stairs.
  • Keep devices away from radiators, heaters, open flames or direct sunlight.

Buy smart

  • Choose reputable brands with a CE or UKCA safety mark.
  • Avoid cheap, unbranded, or second-hand batteries and chargers - they fail more easily and can overheat.

If something seems wrong

  • Stop using devices with damaged cables, swollen batteries or burning smells.
  • Recycle old or faulty items safely.
  • Report unsafe charging or storage to your housing team.

Lithium-ion battery fires are rare, but they can be severe and fast-moving. Taking these small steps can help keep you and your home safe.
