The Decent Homes Standard
What you can expect from your home
Cornwall Housing follows the UK Government’s Decent Homes Standard. This is a set of rules that says what a good, safe rented home should be like.
It means your home should be safe, in good repair, warm, and suitable to live in. (UK Government policy statement on the Decent Homes Standard)
1. Your home should be safe
Your home must not have any serious health or safety risks.
This includes making sure there are no very dangerous hazards that could seriously harm you.
If something unsafe is found, it will be fixed.
2. Your home should be in good repair
Your home should be kept in a reasonable condition.
This means important parts of your home should work properly, such as:
- Roof
- Walls
- Windows and doors
- Heating
- Electrics
- Kitchen and bathroom
If something important is broken or badly worn, it should be repaired or replaced.
3. Your home should have basic facilities
Your home should have the basic things you need to live comfortably, such as:
- A kitchen you can use properly
- A bathroom and toilet in a suitable place
- Safe internal areas (including in flats or shared buildings where relevant)
4. Your home should be warm and energy efficient
Your home should be able to be heated to a reasonable level so you can stay warm.
It should also be reasonably energy efficient so it is not unnecessarily expensive to heat.
5. Your home should be free from serious damp and mould
Your home should not have serious damp or mould problems.
If damp or mould is found, it should be looked into and fixed.
What this means for you
Under the Decent Homes Standard, you can expect your home to be:
- Safe
- In a reasonable state of repair
- Warm and comfortable
- Free from serious damp and mould
- Equipped with basic facilities for everyday living.
