Before any kitchen or bathroom renewal, our surveyor will visit to assess the condition of your existing kitchen or bathroom against the Decent Homes Standard. We replace kitchens and bathrooms when they are in poor condition AND have passed their expected lifecycle — typically around 20 years for kitchens and 30 years for bathrooms, although we use a survey-led approach rather than relying on age alone.
If a kitchen renewal is needed, you will be offered a choice of door style and finish from our standard range. Kitchens are supplied through Howdens (Greenwich range), with three door finishes available: Dove Grey, Natural Oak, and White. Non-slip flooring is available in cream or grey.
All Cornwall Housing staff and contractors carry identification cards. Please do not allow anyone into your home without seeing their identification. If you are in any doubt about whether a caller is genuine, please call us on 0300 1234 161 before letting them in.
If work is required, our contractor will write to you confirming the start date and how long the work will take. They will also walk you through your choices in person before any work begins.
If you would prefer not to have the works carried out, you can decline. We will record your decision and your home will be reviewed at the next survey cycle. Where statutory health and safety work is needed (for example gas or electrical safety), we have a legal duty to maintain compliance and we will discuss this with you separately.
If you are a leaseholder, major works to your block may require you to contribute to the cost. By law (Section 20 of the Landlord and Tenant Act 1985) we must consult you before going ahead with any works that will cost you more than £250 individually, or before signing a long-term agreement that will cost you more than £100 a year. More information is on the Major works page.
