Summer means BBQ time!

At Cornwall Housing we want all of our residents to be able to enjoy a safe and happy barbecue season.

Barbecues can be dangerous because of hot coals, flammable liquids, and gas, so follow these simple guidelines to stay safe:

  • Never us a BBQ on a balcony. In small spaces, flames can easily ignite other items and start fires that may spread to the building.

  • Check gas BBQs carefully. Make sure pipes and the gas cylinder are connected correctly.

  • Keep it steady. Place the BBQ on flat, level ground so it doesn’t tip over.

  • Mind the wind. Light the BBQ with the wind blowing away from you to avoid flare-ups.

  • Watch your clothes. Don’t wear loose sleeves, scarves or clothes that could catch fire.

  • Stay clear of hazards. Keep the BBQ well away from overhanging obstructions such as tree branches, and keep a safe distance from things like fences, garden sheds, tents and caravans.

  • Use safe fire starters. Do not use any flammable liquids other than recommended barbecue lighting fluid. Never use methylated spirits, paraffin or petrol. It’s safer to use firelighters, but if you choose to use lighting fluid, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and never pour or spray it onto hot coals.

  • Light safely. Always light the BBQ at arm’s length, keeping your face away from the flames. Do not put your face over the BBQ.

  • Keep children safe. Keep them away from the BBQ while it’s lit, and after cooking, as it may still be hot.  Ensure matches and lighters are placed out of reach of children.

  • Follow the rules outdoors. If you’re barbequing outside your own garden - remember The Countryside Code - GOV.UK

  • Dispose of the charcoal safely. Only after it has cooled completely.

Enjoy your BBQ safely - and make it fun for everyone!
